Car Seat Fit Calculator: Will It Fit Your Car?

Measure your back seat once, and the guesswork is over — which seats fit three across, how far each one pushes your front passenger seat forward, and how long your child can stay rear-facing. Every dimension is the manufacturer’s own figure.

The short answer

Most seats fit three across. Two don’t. The Graco Extend2Fit needs 57 inches of bench; the Graco 4Ever DLX needs 63.6 inches — more than any common vehicle has. If three-across matters to you, start with the Clek Foonf, Chicco KeyFit Max or Britax Poplar S.

Step one

Will three fit across my back seat?

Measure the usable width across your back seat — the inner edge of one door to the inner edge of the other, at roughly the height of the seat cushion. Do not measure the seat cushions themselves; measure the gap they sit in.

inches

Compact sedan ≈ 51–53″ · mid-size sedan 54–56″ · 3-row SUV 57–60″. If your car has a fold-down centre armrest, the usable width is usually narrower than the door-to-door figure.

Widths are reproduced from the reference calculator, not independently verified. Real-world fit also depends on how your bench is contoured and where the buckle stalks sit — leave an inch of slack if you can. A width match is not installation approval.

Step two

How long can my child stay rear-facing?

Rear-facing is the best-documented protection a seat offers, and it ends at whichever limit arrives first — the seat’s rear-facing weight, or its rear-facing height.

lb
inches

Many manufacturers require at least 1″ between the top of the head and the top of the seat shell. Check your seat manual.

Six of 9 seats are within listed rear-facing limits.

Graco SnugRide SnugFit DLX 30 lb 32″ Within listed limits Check Price
Nuna PIPA RX 30 lb 30″ Limit reached Check Price

Always check the seat manual and headroom. Never exceed either the height or weight limit. Unknown height limits require manual verification. Many manufacturers use a 1″ head-to-shell rule; follow the specific rules for your seat. Bent legs alone are not a reason to turn forward-facing.

Step three

How far will it push my front seat?

A rear-facing seat sits on your bench — but it is usually deeper than the bench itself. Compare footprints before checking the installed fit in your car.

inches

From the backrest to the front edge of the cushion, where your knees would be.

Five of 9 seats overhang your 18″ bench by 4″ or less.

Seat Seat depth Overhang Footprint comparison

Diono Radian 3QXT SafePlus 16″ none Sits within the bench Check Price

Graco SnugRide SnugFit DLX 27.5″ +9.5″ Larger overhang Check Price
Chicco KeyFit Max ClearTex 28″ +10″ Larger overhang Check Price

Overhang is the seat’s footprint minus your bench depth. It is not a prediction of installed rear-facing depth or permitted overhang. Recline angle and base can change the space needed. Check the manufacturer’s instructions and the actual installation in your car.
